OCI M adds RM4.6bil investment to strengthen Malaysia’s renewable energy and semiconductor industry

OCI M Sdn. Bhd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of OCI Holdings, has reaffirmed plans for an additional RM4.6 billion investment by 2028, reinforcing Malaysia’s strategic role in the global renewable energy and advanced materials supply chain. This investment will significantly expand OCI M’s solar-grade polysilicon production capabilities and establish Malaysia as the first in Southeast Asia with polysilicon-semiconductor grade capability. OCI M operates in Samalaju Industrial Park in Bintulu, Sarawak.

OCI TerraSus, formerly known as OCI M, operates its plant in the Samalaju Industrial Park in Bintulu, Sarawak. A subsidiary of OCI Holdings, OCI TerraSus specializes in producing high-purity solar-grade polysilicon with an annual production capacity of 35,000 metric tonnes. Its expertise in advanced manufacturing processes ensures it remains a key supplier in the global supply chain of silicon wafers and photovoltaic cells.

OCI Holdings plans to begin commercial production of solar cells in the first half of 2026, with expansion in the latter half of the year. By linking OCI TerraSus' polysilicon with this new solar cell manufacturing facility, OCI Holdings is establishing a competitive, fully non-Chinese solar supply chain that further strengthens Malaysia’s role in the global clean energy market.

OCI Holdings Chairman Lee WooHyun said the new solar cell subsidiary would advance OCI Holdings’ position in the U.S. market and enhance the global competitiveness of OCI TerraSus.

“Our high-purity solar-grade polysilicon from Malaysia will be the cornerstone of this clean solar supply chain, meeting the growing demand for sustainable energy in the U.S. and reinforcing OCI TerraSus’ role as a leader in the solar industry.”

Moving forward, OCI TerraSus remains committed to innovation in polysilicon production as demand for solar energy continues to rise globally. This includes making sure the company is equipped with advanced manufacturing processes, ensuring superior quality and efficiency, and further strengthening OCI TerraSus’ role as a key enabler in the transition towards clean and renewable energy.

OCI TerraSus will strive to strengthen its position as a global key leader in the renewable energy sector by investing in state-of-the-art technologies and leveraging Sarawak and Malaysia’s strategic advantages, which include strong government support, highly skilled human capital, robust infrastructure, and sustainable energy sources.
